Joseph Slater
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The man accused of bringing a gun to the M and R Station, then firing a single shot as police were trying to break up a fight in the parking lot, will now go to trial on gun-related offenses next January.
Joseph Slater is accused of felony counts for recklessly endangering safety, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and receiving stolen property. Officers have also filed a misdemeanor count for bringing a firearm into a business that sells alcohol.
The 45-year-old was part of a fight in the parking lot of the west-side bar in September 2023. When officers arrived to break up the skirmish, they saw him holding the gun and ordered him to drop it. As the group scattered, a single shot was heard.
Officers canvassed the neighborhood and recovered two firearms, including one that was reported as stolen out of the Green Bay area.
Trial dates have been scheduled for January 20th – 22nd. He faces nearly 30 years in the state prison system if found guilty on all counts.
The case had been scheduled for trial in the spring of 2024, but that was wiped from the calendar when Slater’s defense team withdrew his request for a speedy trial.
All counts carry a repeat modifier, which could increase his sentence. Further court action is scheduled for June 4th and January 6th.
