STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Portage County man accused of killing his parents last summer is now competent for trial.
Court records show John Shulfer was found competent during a court appearance last week, nine and a half months after he was deemed not competent for trial. The case will now proceed to a preliminary hearing later today.
The 36-year-old is accused of shooting his parents, Paula and Dale Shulfer, during an argument last July. When law enforcement arrived, he refused commands to drop his weapon and was shot by an officer, but survived his injuries.
Two children were present in the home at the time of the shooting. An investigation determined that officers were justified in their use of force.
Charges against him include two counts for intentional homicide, two counts of causing mental harm to a child, and one count for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Each count also carries a repeat modifier. He faces an automatic life sentence for the homicide counts alone.
Shulfer has yet to enter a plea for the charges, and no trial dates have been set.
