MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers were reportedly serious contenders to land former Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal during the MLB tradeline offering more than one of their top-ranked prospects for the former Cy Young winner.
According to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy, the Brewers offered Detroit infielder Luis Pena, infielder Jett Williams, and outfielder Josh Adamczewski, but the Tigers wanted a young controllable pitcher in the deal, which may have prompted the Tigers to accept the Dodgers’ offer, which included pitcher River Ryan, baseball’s 68th-ranked prospect.
The Brewers offered three prospects listed in the top 100, but they refused to trade pitcher Logan Henderson, who has been excellent for the Brewers this season, going 5-1 with a 2.66 ERA.
After Monday’s loss to Pittsburgh, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Matt Arnold said the Brewers front office was “were prepared to push a lot of chips in” to acquire Skubal and added, “When you’re in on a lot of stuff, there’s certainly some things where you come up short, and you just got to pick yourself up and dust yourself off, and try to do what you can to get the next thing. And ultimately, I think we were able to accomplish a lot over the last 48 hours to get some stuff done to really help the team.”
At the deadline, Milwaukee acquired veteran pitchers Dustin May and left-hander reliever JoJo Romero, as well as longtime Colorado Rockies reliever Antonio Senzatela for a package of prospects that included rising stars Josiah Ragsdale and Alexander Frias.
