STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A new Professor position at UWSP will be dedicated to research, education, and public outreach focused on black bear management and conservation in Central Wisconsin.
The Boone and Crockett Club has given the school a $1 million gift that will be held in an endowment within the school’s foundation. Funds from the endowment will pay the professor’s salary and operating expenses, including student coursework and research initiatives. The goal of the program is to develop a better understanding of the role black bears play in Wisconsin’s wildlife landscape.
“This new endowment will boost our research efforts, allowing us to do better things for bears, for students, and for the state of Wisconsin,” said UWSP Associate Professor of Wildlife Cady Sartini, who will serve as the Stephens Family Foundation Boone and Crockett Wildlife Professor. “We’ll be able to tackle bigger conservation questions by partnering with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on projects they might not be able to handle on their own. It’s a win-win for everyone, and I’m so grateful to get to be a part of it.”
Similar positions have been funded at schools including Texas A&M-College Station, Clemson University (SC), University of Wyoming, Oregon State University, and Michigan State University. Operational oversight will be guided by a six-person fellowship advisory committee comprising three representatives appointed by the Boone and Crockett Club president and three appointed by the dean of the UWSP College of Natural Resources, according to a press release from the Boone and Crockett Club.
