MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — A former employee at the Greenheck Turner Community Center was sentenced for child sex crimes that occurred while he was a coach at a Milwaukee-area high school.
Bennet Schmitz pled guilty to one count of Child Enticement and one count of Sexual Assault of a student by school staff as part of a deal reached in late July. Charges stem from his time as a track coach with the Greenfield School District, a position he held from 2022-’24.
His sentence includes seven years in prison and a full no-contact order with the victim. He will also spend the rest of his life on the state sex offender registry and complete all therapy and treatment.
Schmitz will also be placed on extended supervision, the length of which will be determined at a later date.
Officials with the D.C. Everest School District said Schmitz was not a licensed educator. As soon as the district was notified of the charges, they deactivated his key cards and electronics and placed him on leave. Superintendent Casey Nye said the 23-year-old passed all background checks before being hired to work at GTCC.
Officials with the Greenfield School District added that Schmitz passed their background checks. They were notified of the accusations when a student shared concerns with a “trusted school staff member” who promptly reported the matter.
