EAU CLAIRE, WI (WSAU-WAOW) A Wisconsin state trooper has died from his injuries after he fell from a bridge on I-94. He was trying to deploy a tire deflation device during a traffic pursuit.
Trooper Bradley Ritger, 29, fell from a bridge deck west of the Dunn County/Eau Claire County line on Sept. 21 as he moved to a position of cover after deploying the device, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Wisconsin State Patrol. He died from his injuries on Oct. 2 despite lifesaving efforts and critical medical care.
“The entire law enforcement community mourns the loss of a brave and dedicated colleague,” said Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan. “His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten and while he may not be with us, his legacy will forever be embodied by those who, like him, go to work often placing service above self.”
Ritger joined the Wisconsin State Patrol as a member of the 67th Recruit Class. He served in the Northwest Region for nearly five years, primarily in the Dunn County area.
During his career, he attained certifications as a general law enforcement instructor, mobile field force team member and squad leader, and salvage vehicle inspector. Before joining the state patrol, Ritger served with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for nearly three years.
WisDOT and the Wisconsin State Patrol extended their deepest condolences to Ritger’s family, friends, loved ones and all who served alongside him. Funeral arrangements are being made by the family.
