SAN FRANCISCO, CA (WSAU) — Jandal Gustave’s bases-loaded balk in the 8th inning allowed the winning run to score for San Francisco in a 2-1 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday.
Willy Adames led the Brewers offense with two hits and two strikeouts in four plate appearances. Omar Narvaez brought home the Crew’s only run on a sac fly in the 8th, scoring Luis Gonzalez.
Brent Suter was charged with the loss as the game-winning run for the Giants was charged to his stat line, though he did not commit the balk which brought home the run.
Suter was brought on in relief of Eric Lauer in the 8th. He managed to get two outs but left the game with runners on second and third. Gustave was brought on and immediately loaded the bases by hitting Evan Longoria with a pitch. He then balked, allowing each runner to move up a base, before ending the 8th with a strikeout of Mike Yastrzemski.
Lauer allowed two hits and one earned run in 7 innings of work.
Milwaukee did get one runner on board in the 9th but failed to mount a serious threat.
The same two teams will go at it again this afternoon to close out the ceremonial first-half of the season. Pregame coverage from Oracle Park begins at 2:30 PM on WSAU.
