WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau School Superintendent Dr. Keith Hilts says district leaders are ready for more dialog regarding a possible restructuring of the district’s schools.
No action is imminent, and no plan to restructure the district’s makeup currently exists. Though residents should expect the conversation to continue in the next few months.
“[The process] will likely include dozens if not hundreds of people over many months to try and create this plan,” said Hilts.
Board member Lance Trollop said community education is important to squash rumors and misconceptions before they spread, adding many assumed that closing a school or two could mean larger class sizes in the lower levels.
“That does not mean larger class sizes, and some of the staff didn’t know that either. It means more consistent class sizes, not larger,” said Trollop.
Hilts did not lay out a timeline for when the wide-reaching community engagement would begin but did say the process will include videos and community input sessions which will be similar to the process they took for the recently-passed referendum.
Also on Monday district leaders gave unanimous approval for a $62,000 contract with Ohio-based National School Safety and Security to conduct an audit of the district’s security features and procedures for all buildings.
