RIB MOUNTAIN, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Friday was Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day to remember fallen officers, and to end National Police Week.
Marathon County Sheriff’s Office hosted a ceremony honoring past fallen officers, and providing current law enforcement with motivation to keep serving.
Law enforcement, neighbors, officials, and family members of fallen officers united at Bluegill Bay in Rib Mountain, to remember the six officers of Marathon County that died in the line of duty.
“We get to see families of fallen officers, fallen firefighters, colleagues, as well as the community. It’s neat to bring everyone together for a really neat event, and just have that time to reflect, and to reconnect,” said Marathon County Sheriff Chad Billeb.
Detective Jason Weiland of Everest Metropolitan Police was killed during an incident in Rothchild, in March of 2017. His wife Kara attended the event, and still feels the support, over 9 years later.
“It’s hard to put into words. I mean it’s something that you obviously don’t want your loved one to be forgotten. I think our community definitely makes sure that he is not. Even during the year if I run into people that I don’t know but recognize me, will tell me that they are thinking of us and they remember Jason’s sacrifice, and that’s very touching,” said Kara Weiland, wife of fallen officer Jason.
Jason is one of the 24,700 fallen officers being remembered across the country. Another purpose of today, is to remind everyone to support current law enforcement, and to keep that number of fallen officers from growing.
“We also have a commitment to training, and training regularly so that we can prevent tragedy from happening,” said Billeb.
