WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Communities across the region will hold ceremonies Friday to mark 25 years since the 9/11 attacks.
Merrill
In Merrill, the city will hold a ceremony Friday morning at 7:30 a.m., leading up to a bell ringing at 7:46 a.m..
The same time the first plane hit the World Trade Center.
Jesse Boyd, Lincoln County Board Vice Chair, District 10 said the event gives younger generations a chance to learn about the attacks.
“My kids aren’t old enough to remember it, They weren’t even born. So, it’s just a good idea to have everybody in the community here in remembrance of 9/11,” Boyd said.
Plover
The Plover Fire Department will walk around its 9/11 memorial nine times Friday morning at 9 a.m..
The memorial includes a piece from one of the World Trade Center buildings.
The nine laps equal about 2,200 feet, the equivalent of 110 stories — the height of the twin towers.
Community members are invited to join both walks.
“It’s very humbling, it’s very eye opening because we never know what we’re getting into when we get a call. Any of our calls can be our last call. So, just to do something in memory of the people that made the ultimate sacrifice is very important to us,” said Sullivan.
This year’s speakers include former American Marine and former hostage Kevin Hermening, who was held captive at the United States Embassy in Tehran, Iran for 444 days.
The VFW will also have an honor guard to sound taps and give a traditional rifle salute for their fallen comrades.
The ceremony will begin at 9:57 a.m., with a brief intermission shortly after 10 a.m. It will reconvene and conclude at approximately 10:28 a.m.
Nekoosa
The climb will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Tri Norse Outdoor Park, located at 1001 County Road O in Nekoosa.
Following the memorial, attendees can gather for a meal with friends, family and neighbors.
