Melvin Cornelius
FRIENDSHIP, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – An Adams County man was sentenced to 28 years in prison plus five years of extended release after shooting at officers during a traffic stop two years ago.
Melvin Cornelius, 47, of Friendship pleaded no contest, Wednesday afternoon, to attempted first degree intentional homicide. Four other charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
According to the criminal complaint, Cornelius called 911 in June 2024 saying he was on meth.
“There ain’t no way I’m going down with my guns and drugs,” Cornelius said.
Officers caught up to his vehicle but he refused to stop. He got out of his vehicle at one point and fired at officers. A sheriff’s deputy returned fire, striking him. Officers provided first aid at the scene before booking him into the Adams County jail.
